Next stop was Aberdovey. As the train pulled into the small, quaint Welsh town, children were playing on the streets, blissfully unaware of the war. The scene was such a contrast from the bombed-out buildings of London and the big cities.

The men left the train and marched up the hill to their assembly point. The skipper addressed them, welcoming them to Wales. He had them all fall in and they were told to remove the peaked caps from their adoptive regiments. Each man marched in turn, shook hands with the skipper and accepted the green berets and shoulder flashes for their new unit. Then they were ordered to disperse.

‘What do we do now?’ Joseph asked Harry, as the men around them disappeared back toward the town.

‘You heard the skipper. We have to find our own billets. Come on.’ Harry didn’t think it would be difficult to find a place to stay. With extra ration cards and an income of about two pounds a week, he felt rich.

They met up with some of the other men and together they found the largest house in the village. The couple who owned it were more than happy to give them rooms.
